The North Koreans have spent decades sacrificing everything developing their own nuclear capability to ensure it never happens again. It's important to remember one's history, as Mr Lewis may or may not have the Korean conflict killed nearly 30% of the entire population of North Korea, most of those inflicted by American troops and air power. Same for other emerging nuclear powers from Pakistan to Israel. Countering their aggression makes a great training scenario but I don't see it coming to pass. To address the DPRK threat while they've tested missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads to the American continent, they've made it very clear that their nuclear force is a defensive deterrent. Yet, no one wants to see even a limited nuclear exchange the results would be catastrophic.Īs I hinted above, the very best use such a facility can be put to is as a development site for the iteration of technologies that will improve hit ratios, reliability and therefore security. That said, there have been too many close calls with the current Mutually Assured Destruction model to think we can continue to dodge that bullet forever. People want to grab onto the idea that missile defense is going to protect them when in fact the tech just isn't there yet and may not be for decades. I'm not faulting those developing the technology in any way.
